Become a Volunteer
Not a Gap-Year Cliché. A Real Seat at the Table.
Volunteering with Wayward Outdoors isn't about arriving with good intentions and a camera. It's about showing up to do real work alongside the people whose valley it is, on projects they've asked for, in ways that leave something behind other than photos.
We built our whole model around one idea: locals aren't hired help, they're hosts, guides, teachers, and decision-makers. Volunteering follows the same rule. You're not here to save anyone. You're here to help with what's actually needed, learn a huge amount in the process, and leave the place a little better funded and a little more connected than you found it.
Short-term 1–2 weeks or Longer-stay
What Volunteering Looks Like
Outdoor education & youth programs — supporting the guided exploration and youth development work we already run across Kumaon's valleys
Homestay & heritage stay support — helping host families with hospitality, small infrastructure projects, or seasonal upkeep
Skill-shares — teaching something you know (language, a craft, first aid, digital skills) in exchange for what the community teaches you
Wellness retreat support — logistics, facilitation assistance, or wellness-adjacent skills if you have them
Tell us what you're good at — we match volunteers to real needs, not filler tasks.
Who This Is For
People who want to spend real time in one place, not tick off a checklist
Anyone with a specific, useful skill — teaching, healthcare, construction, design, writing, wellness practices
Travelers who are comfortable with basic conditions, unpredictable schedules, and taking direction from local hosts rather than the other way around
This isn't a fit if you're looking for a resume line with minimal commitment.
We ask for 1 week minimum.
What You Can Expect From Us
A placement matched to an actual, named need — not a generic "help out" role
A homestay with a local family for the duration of your stay
An orientation on the community, the project, and how to be a useful (not extractive) guest
Support from our team throughout, not just an intro email and radio silence
What We Ask From You
Show up on time, follow the host's lead, and treat the placement as a commitment, not a side activity to your holiday
Be upfront about your skills and limitations — overselling yourself helps no one
Respect that you're a guest in someone's home and someone's culture, not a tourist attraction
Cost & Logistics
