Most trips put you on one side of the exchange — you pay, you're served, you leave. Give & Take flips that. Over 3-4 days, you live with a family in the valley and swap something real: a skill you have, for a skill they have. Not a performance for tourists. An actual trade between two people who each walk away having gained something.
This isn't a volunteering trip. There's no project quota, no minimum-weeks commitment, no sense of "helping." It's for travelers who want a real connection with the place they're visiting, not just a homestay with a nice view.
How It Works
Before you arrive, we ask what you can teach — a language, a craft, a trade, something digital, cooking, music, whatever you've got. We match you with a host family or small group in the valley who's genuinely curious about it, not just being polite.
While you're there, the exchange runs both directions at once — you're not "teaching a class," you're trading real time. An afternoon showing someone conversational English might sit next to a morning learning how they terrace a hillside or make their bread. It's mutual, not transactional.
By the end, you've picked up a skill or a piece of local knowledge you couldn't have gotten from a guidebook, and you've left something behind that isn't just money.
Who This Is For
Curious travelers who want a genuine two-way exchange, not a class they're paying to attend or a project they're paying to help with
Anyone with a teachable skill — language, a craft, a trade, cooking, music, digital literacy, first aid, whatever it is
People who are okay with the exchange being improvised rather than scripted — this works best when both sides show up curious, not with a syllabus
Not a fit if: you want a structured "workshop" experience with a fixed outcome, or you're looking for the longer-commitment, project-based version — that's what Volunteer is for.
Day 1 — Arrive, settle into the homestay, first shared meal, easy introductions — you find out what they're curious about, they find out what you've got to offer
Day 2 — The exchange properly begins — your skill-share session(s), their skill-share session(s), built around the household's actual rhythm rather than a fixed schedule
Day 3 — More of the same, deeper in — this is usually when it stops feeling like an "activity" and starts feeling like just... time spent together
Day 4 — Slow morning, final exchange or informal wrap-up, depart by afternoon
Homestay for the duration, all meals with the host family
Matching with a host based on the skill you bring and what they're curious about
Light facilitation from our team if the exchange needs a translator or icebreaker to get going
What's Not Included
Travel to and from Haldwani.
A guaranteed "outcome" the value here is the exchange itself, not a certificate or finished project
Do I need to be an expert at what I'm teaching? No — you need to be able to share it with some patience. A hobby-level skill taught well beats an expert-level skill taught badly.
What if nobody wants to learn what I offer? This is why we match before you arrive — we won't place you with a host unless there's real interest in what you bring.
Is this the same as Volunteer? No. Volunteer is a longer commitment built around a named community need. Give & Take is shorter, mutual, and built around whatever skill you happen to bring — no minimum weeks, no project quota.
What should I bring to teach? Whatever you're genuinely good at and can explain simply — bring any basic materials your skill needs (a musical instrument, sketch materials, etc.); we'll help source what we can locally.
